West Wind Las Vegas Drive-In

Since we’ve had our little one, it’s been hard for us to watch movies since we don’t have anyone to leave the baby with.

So we’ve just been patient to wait for the movie to turn up on Netflix. But one day, hubby found a way! He looked up drive-in theaters around Las Vegas and found the West Wind Drive-In. We’ve watched 3 movies since then and it’s been so convenient for us.

Alright so first things first, let me introduce this theater to you. West Wind is a family owned theater that started in 1952. They have lots of location in California, Arizona, and Nevada. They operate with digital projectors that casts on screens big enough for their whole parking lot. And their audio is sent directly to your car radio. After paying for admission, they’ll give you your receipt with the FM station you need to tune in for the movie you’re going to watch.

So here’s a tip for you. For most cars, you can just run the radio using your car battery and you won’t end up draining it. You can also run your car periodically to recharge you battery. But the best way would be to bring your own portable radio. Makes it so much easier and saves you from draining your car.

And even with it being an old school drive-in, they show the same movies that are shown in indoor cinemas. So they’re very up-to-date. This drive-in has 5 screens with very spacious parking lots. Most are paved but some I think there are 2 that aren’t but it doesn’t really pose a problem. They also have a concession stand that’s serves beverages and snacks. I haven’t tried their popcorn yet but I heard that it’s pretty good.

Kid friendly

There are so many great things I can discuss about this drive-in, but the most important reason why I love it so much is that it’s so convenient for mommas like myself to watch a first run movie with their kids here.

When you have an infant or a toddler, you can just put your baby in the car seat or pick them up when they get fussy. And since you’re just inside your vehicle, you don’t need to worry about disturbing other people. That’s what we do with miss Aria, she just sits with me and falls to sleep after a while. (Seriously she’s been so awesome in the theater lately). Also, before the movie starts, you can let your kiddos play at their playground just next to their concession stand. Just make sure to keep an eye on them.

I love how affordable this theater is. It’s $7.50 for adults, $1.50 for children 5-11 years old, and FREE for less than 4 years. But they have this special on Tuesdays that’s $5.50 for adults and same for the rest. The great thing about this is they offer double feature for certain movies and you don’t have to pay any additional fees. You can basically watch 2 movies for $7.50 or $5.50!

Friendly Staff

They do have the friendliest people manning the place. They’re very approachable and always have a smile on their face. I’ve even seen them help someone out with their controls in their car for like a radio station problem. Any questions you may have about their theater, they can help you with it.

You can enjoy first run movies just the way you would Netflix and Chill. Seriously. You can bring whatever you want in your car. Of course there are a few things that are not allowed in the theater such as firearms, weapons of any kind, and alcoholic beverages. BUT! I think you can just sneak a small glass of wine somewhere and it’ll be fine.

I’ve seen people bring chairs and tables actually and that’s not a bad idea. If you have a big family, it’s nice to just do a small picnic while enjoying your movie. Just make sure to not make too much noise and not occupy too much space.

Alright. Let’s talk about the little bit of “not-so-good” stuff. This mostly comes from other parties and totally correctable. Since it is an open area, you cannot avoid noise from other people. But like I said, when you are just inside your car with the windows rolled up, it’s usually not a big problem. One of the major problems we encountered the last time we watched a movie was that the group of people next to us was smoking and the smoke kept blowing to our car. Aside from the smell, we had a baby in the car that we do not want exposed. So we had to keep the car running the whole time with the windows rolled up and the AC on. So if your family is also sensitive to this, it’s better to either do the same thing we did or move to another spot. From time to time, you also get cars that forget to turn off their lights and it blinds you for a bit. Just honk I guess so they can be aware about it.

There you go! Dear readers you should definitely check this place out. Drive-In theaters are still awesome. Especially for a family with kiddos!
